i will not recommend changing ur processor...coz u will also change the motherboard...if u do dat, change the whole pc...

anyway...u can upgrade ur ram, as long as ur botherboard can handle...and try reformatting ur harddrve...or u can remove unwanted programs... if u dont have a video card, buy one which is compatible on ur pc...do this so that ur ram wont be shared and u can use the full performance of ur ram...its all about compatiblity...make sure u buy the right hardware for upgrading...

As others posted, your system is fairly old and you can only upgrade to a certain point before replacement is the only way to improve performance. Your motherboard can only take the same processor family. Generally they can handle less of a maximum memory (compared to todays systems) and a much slower speed than what is available today. The motherboard will also limit how far you can upgrade your graphics card. You probably have an AGP 2X or 4X so you won't be able to go beyond what your board supports. The problem in upgrading your motherboard though is that your existing processor and memory will not be compatible so you will probably spend close to $200 if you build a relatively economical but newer system. Your hard drive will be compatible with the new system (even boards that focus on SATA drives still often have at least one IDE connection). Your graphics card should be compatible as long as it supports the AGP speed (in which case you'd avoid the PCI-express boards).

If you recently experienced a slow down in your system though, check to see if any unneeded applications are running. Also consider that newer applications probably consider your system as "the minimum" hardware level now so performance will be slower on your system.

It may actually be cheaper to buy a new computer then to upgrade a computer of that age. The 730MHz machines are Pentium 3 chips. The increase in speed you will get will not be that much as your motherboard will only accept a upgraded processer in the dame family of processors. So you are not looking at a great increase in speed. To get a noticable increase you would need to replace the motherboard, processor and memory since the old memory will not work ona new motherboard. So if you are looking a a great increase in speed buy a new computer. you can find a nice new P4 @ 2-3GHz for about $500. If you are not looking to spend that much, Then you could reformat the harddrive and re-install your current operating system. Windows is notorious for needing to be reinstalled after 12-18 months.

Good luck.

Most computer users have been trained that if you want more speed for your computer, then add more memory. Well, this is true, in certain circumstances. But for most of the times, it really is just bad files in your registry files. Corrupted or missing registry files can make your computer too slow.
The registry is a main part of your computer's Operating System. With time, as you use Windows and install and uninstall programs, your registry will get congested and full of errors. So your computer could slow down. So, if you can clean it up this problem can be solved.Sometimes you can speed computer up by 300%. To clean up registry,You can download a software called regsitry cleaner---Clean registry, remnant, corrupt files and temp files,history,cookies,etc.. This site:

lists top 5 registry cleaner, from there you can download and scan for free.
Good luck!

I hate to say it, but the computer that you have isn't worth upgrading....why?...well, for what it would cost you to put some new, faster RAM in to that thing, you could go to the swapmeet' and buy one 2x or 5x faster for 50.00 which would be about what the upgrade would cost.

Upgrade your processor and RAM. Hard drive space has nothing to do with speed.
