As a teacher my life would be a lot easier if cell phones weren't allowed in school. But I do see reasons for having cell phones in school. Parents may use them to contact them in case of an emergency (earthquake, natural disaster, etc.). Students can contact parents in case of a school lockdown (to let the parents know what is happening). Also, if students need to be picked up after school due to a schedule change or some other reason, students would need to have a cell phone on them.
Having said that, if I have a student playing around with their phone during my class I let them know quickly it won't be tolerated.

It's hard to decide if cell phones should be allowed in school; on one hand, there are kids that use their cell phones to communicate with their parents. The bad parts about cell phones in schools is that they are a distraction, and they could be used for drug or gang related activities.

So you can talk to your boyfriend during class? So you can order pizza for lunch? So you can text folks while the teacher is trying to teach you something?
No, no, no.
My personal belief is that students should be able to hang onto their phones while in the building, but they should be kept off. If parents need to contact their children, they should do it the old fashioned way, through the school office. If students need to contact their parents, they should go to the office and ask persmission to use their cell phone, and the conversation should take place in the school office.
Allowing cell phones to be used in schools during school time starts a slippery slope...Can you imagine a building full of students all talking on their phones whenever they want? No way.

NO! They can be a real distraction not only for the teacher but for the rest of the students. If a child needs to contact someone he can always used the phone in the main office. No teacher or administrator will deny a child the right to make a call in an emergency situation. Also kids need to understand that they won't be able to use a phone for frivolous reasons in the work world.

I believe so, they should just have restrictions on usage. But it allows students to contact parents to arrange rides things they would be doing on an office phone or a pay phone with out a cell bolth of which are more money.

No. You're there to learn, not to continue your social events in the classroom.
I personally believe any student that interrupts class with a cell/pager/ipod, etc, or cheats using the same devices should have the device confiscated, destroyed, and then be suspended or expelled from school.

Im a teacher and Ill say no. If someone needs to contact you...thats what the main office is for. Otherwise, its just another distraction from focusing on your work. Plus txt messaging answers means cheating, which means nothing learned, which means minimum wage.

Even if their not allowed the students are still going to use it. They shouldn't be allowed because it is a big distraction since students can barely pay attention.

or apply for a school licences to have a cell phones, because in the recent school shootings, cell phones might come in handy for security, but than students might play with their cell phones during school time than they should be counseled for the better,

No they shouldn't, there is totally no reason for any student, regardless of their age, to have a phone whilst they are in school.
