Most orbiting objects with any significant size are constantly tracked from Earth and the ISS can maneuver somewhat to avoid them. However, there are a ga-zillion much, much smaller objects zipping around up there that can't be tracked. Should one strike ISS the astronauts would immediately evacuate to an undamaged compartment and seal off the one that took the hit. Hopefully repairs could then be made.

I understand it is constantly peppered by small particles and surely a whole lot of radiation and energy as well as material lost to space from the atmosphere. Bigger stuff would have such a small chance of hitting ths ISS but, like everything else, they have plans to deal with it and train before tours and during their shifts. They don't lose sleep over it.

They do keep track of all the thousands of things in orbit and they have to fire small rockets on the space station every now and then to move it out of the way when the computer says an object will come too close.
