There is a need for dedicated socical workers everywhere, seriously. In general the places where the demand is greatest tend to be lower income neighborhoods, big cities, and places where there are a lot of schools. Every single state in America has (unfortunately) lots of neighborhoods in dire need.

On the flip side, the "best" places to work as a social worker tend to be areas with higher property taxes, since it is often the government who is paying your salary. A lot of cities in the Northeast, for example, have governments with good compensation. Usually these areas aren't quite as needy, though. It all depends on what you are looking for.

I think your home state would be best because you know it and the area. Further, most jobs pay about the same when you look at adjustments for living, so you should work in area you want to live and realize that there's no help relocating in governemnt/state jobs. Good luck with you endeavors!
