What Caused The English Civil War ? This essay is about the English Civil War, and how it was caused. In June 1642, Civil War broke out. It is difficult to say exactly why Civil War broke out because there were problems between Parliament and King Charles I. The English Civil War was fought to see who should have the most power over England, Parliament or Charles I. The King believed that his right to rule came from God, so Charles had more say in governing than Parliament. Parliament wanted more say in governing the country, but the King wouldn't let Parliament have a say. Some people took sides with Charles I and some people took sides with Parliament, but not in a simple way. Many families were split up because they chose sides and fought with each other. Parliament's supporters were nicknamed 'Roundheads', and the Royalists were nicknamed 'Cavaliers'. The people who didn't take sides were forced to make a choice between the King and Parliament.

Charles I was a deformed, retarded dwarf who favored the "Divine Rights of Kings" - basically saying that a deformed, retarded dwarf was better than anyone else and his word was law, above the vote of parliment, etc.
Also, his wife was a holy rolling Catholic at a time when being Catholic in the UK was equivalant to being a Nazi in Israel in the 1950's.
Of course there were many other reasons for the Civil War...too bad Oliver Cromwell instead of a George Washington type lead the Civil War, everything reverted back after his death...Also, too bad his son, James II, did not learn any lessons from his father's experience...

Power of the House of Commons. The king made the foolish mistake of challenging this power. Oliver Cromwell, The Lord Protector, with his generals, formed the best army in Europe at the time, the New Model Army. This army, well equipped and disciplined marched against the king and his rag-tag army of cavaliers and hangers on.

The result at the end of the English civil war was victory for Parliament and people over a despotic king. The kings head was cut off in Whitehall. The Cockney executioner held up the head of the beheaded king, held it out towards the crowd and said "Behold, the head of a traitor..."

Long live the people's Parliament.
Oliver Cromwell, the Lord Protector.

there were so many causes that it is difficult to pick just a few. It is worth looking at the politics of the time. Around the 16th century, the kings believed in Absolutism - Power descends. The origin of power is God. The reason the monarch should have absolute power is that it was given to them by God.

Patriarchalism is another form of this. God created Adam to rule over Eve, so a king has power over his people rather like a husband has power over (please remember this is 16th century) his wife and children. Charles used this to try and disband Parliament as they refused to raise more taxes for him. He wasalready trying to raise taxes to get more money for himself.

Charles' refusal to acknowledge Parliament and accept the law was one of the main reasons for the Civil war.

LACE. This may sound a silly answer but it isn't.
Unlikely for you to learn this correct answer if you don't know words such as Lavenham
My mother lives in a cottage built in 1483, in a large village called Lavenham, in Suffolk England.
The village is filled with tourists who can learn about this place that has not changed a lot during time.
By the late 1500s Lavenham and other towns had become very financially well off.
Wool grew beautifully in the English climate because constant rain grew grass the sheep loved.
Wool came to towns like this in huge quantities.
The village people in Lavenham and other villages had become EXPERT at spinning and weaving wool.
Virtually every-body from the poor to kings wore wool. The woolen cloth was sold over-seas to France, Belgium, Spain etc.
Then Belgium and the countries around there began to create LACE. It was beautiful to see. However it took ages to make and was very EXPENSIVE.
Thus began a TRADE WAR between wool and lace.
In Lavenham one can still see evidence of the hate that the English villagers had for Belgium etc.
Good Queen Elizabeth had worn wool and most importantly bought wool for the soldier's uniforms in the large English army and navy. This helped England become very POWERFUL as soldiers and sailors were comfortable and warm.
Uniforms are VERY important. In 1944 the lack of uniforms for Hitler's soldiers in Russia meant that hundreds of 1,000s of soldiers died and this helped our side win World War Two.

King Charles was really vain and wore really excessive clothes. He wore LACE, at cuffs, neck and had lace on all his courtiers clothes.
Being a selfish king he forgot about the importance of wool to the villagers of England, to the economy of England, and to the whole sucess of England. His relatives came from France and he did not care for the English.
He did NOT fight to keep the English wool trade.
Thus the people became poor and this meant they went hungry and starved.
The houses in Lavenham still stand. They are made of wood.
In poor villages the hungry people had nothing to burn to keep them warm as they became homeless they tore the houses down to use for fire-wood which is why Lavenham is unique.
Lavenham people were very rich and managed there. They also supported Cromwell and were re-paid by him with food.
Lavenham is now a very prosperous tourist village. Cottages there are sold for millions of pounds in some cases. And you can read books, only published locally about the period of history you are studying
Hope this helps. It is 100% accurate and not easy to find out-side of Lavenham.
