I have seen a man put in Jail for non-payment of support and I don't think this helps the father nor the mother. You cannot pay support if you are in jail and not working!

And it's not far that their children can't eat either so if they won't pay then go sit in a cell. He at least gets three squares a day, who says his child does?!?!

I am not going to bad mouth the dads this time. I have a BF of 5 years, he and his wife divorced over 7 years ago, He DID NOT get to see his kids for 7 years, he paid and paid on the child support, she kept suing for more, cost of living alimony, about year 3 he got tired of paying for something that he never got to see, was constantly in debt because of her neediness on more and more money. The man could not even afford a place to live when I met him, he had nothing, a duffle bag and some worn out clothes. Thank God he was a truck driver or he would have been sleeping on the street. the problem in a lot of cases, women take the kids and hide them from dad, tarnish their little minds against their father and use the children as a way to get a bigger pay check.(H#ll his ex has a brand new home, 2 new cars, a new Harley) Men should get visitation and should pay. The payment should not be more than he makes, And ALSO, I think if the dad has to, as an example here, pay $1000 a month, the mother should have to put $1000 a month with that money. Sure I know a lot of you are saying well he made the baby, yeah and so did she, she should be just as responsible as the dad. There comes a time when a dad just gives up, at least being in jail he has food and shelter and a good reason that he isnt seeing his baby on Saturday, rather than moms lame excuse of "the kids are busy"
For a few of the women here that are saying take the fathers property I would like to add, My husband is paying a huge amount of child support, $2000 a month for 3 kids, this year when he filed his taxes guess what the ex gets the refund. He got almost $8000 in return, because we have a 2 year old so you know the child credit really helps out. And his wonderful ex wife has that money now, why should divorced men even try, they cant own anything, they cant even live it up on their tax returns. I know his ex is one in a hundred, but if you listen to women and men out there you start to realize why men quit everything. There are fathers rights, but when you cant afford the lawyer your screwed.
I also agree with a few of the others that said put the money into an account for the kids when they turn 18, Wonderful Suggestion!!!

There are many reasons. Sometimes they have a hard time affording it. Sometimes they are spiteful *******. Sometimes it's because the mother will deny visitation and poison the child's mind about the father. Men, who rarely get physical custody, are often frustrated by being basically cut out of the family and then being required to pay for the privilege.
It's funny how child support is one debt that they still have a debtor's prison for. Men can be assigned child support based on what income they are estimated they "should" be able to earn, and then if they don't earn that and pay they can be jailed. Amazing system.

That is not the only consequence for not paying child support. If the person actually has a job they will get the child support automatically taken out of their paychecks. they have other ways of getting the money. If the person has no job than they go to jail. It doesn't help the mother or the father but obviously the father wasn't doing what he was supposed to do anyway. If you have a child you need to be responsible for that child. If you are court ordered to do something and you do not do it than you need to face the consequences. What else do you suggest they do? If a person doesn't have a job you can't get money from them they need to have some sort of consequence they can't just run scott free.

If your life is messed up YOU DID IT so wake up!! If you don't have anything it's due to you causing so much upheaval in everyone's life. So get your sh**t together. Dad can go to court now - get a lawyer and have him petition to stop the child support since your living with him. An now STAY PUT don't do this back in forth crrap. Don't use excuses to cover for yourself with all the adhd. You just need to try an focus and TRY to do it. Get your H.S. Diploma otherwise Dad will be paying for you till your 50 yrs old. Your not going to change your mom so forget it. But you can change your own self.

Why does it matter if he isn't paying anyway? They wouldn't go to jail if they payed their child support. There are men out there who can pay but they refuse to do so, therefore they deserve exactly what they get. To all the men who have made derogatory comments. You all sound like a group of deadbeat dads, who probably aren't paying your child support. Every mother getting child support is not driving around in a Lexus or living off the system. I personally receive child support for my oldest. Her father and I never went to court, we sat down and discussed it on our own. We agreed to what was fair for both sides. I was not trying to break the bank. When he became a police officer, he came to me and informed me that since I was always understanding when he was either layed off of work or when he was not working during the time when his son (with his new wife) was ill, that he was taking my child support up because now he was making more money and he felt that our daughter deserved more. We established a bank account for our daughter and she now has a hefty bank account. One that will allow her to go to college and not have to worry about working for exrtra money. I work everday and I use my daughter's child support money for her not to support my own life style. The women who use child support money for their own personal needs do not outnumber the ones who use the money for the needs of the children. What about the sorry a** men who are living it up with their new woman while their children are going without basic everyday needs. Just because you were with a gold digging hussy who uses your child support to live lavishly, it doesn't men that all women do this.

b/c men think it's all about the the money, and trust me of what i've seen it's true. my ex is like that, always wanting to know how much money i make. It's stupid. Why the hell should men be labeled like this. It's not our place to pay for all the nice things in your life just b/c you had a child. We have to recover from this huge finaical hit in live so your @ss can ride around in a Lexus and live in a nice home while we sit back and have nothing at all. Support now is ranging anywhere from 50%-30% of the net pycheck of a guy. The system needs improving and stop catering to the monthers just b/c they have a child. Look at people now days. You can find women to just have the child now days. This whole thing about relationships is crap. It's a cover up for all the females out there to get rich off of men by using their body and what god gave them , and look at us, men, we keep failing for it. No wonder people are turning gay!

he wasn't put to jail for not paying child support,he was put in jail for being a man,just be thankful you're a woman,men will go jail even if they didn't do anything,this is coming from a man.

Child support sucks
The way child support should work is like this.
A special bank account is opened for the child or children under child support
a card is issued to the child
that card could only be use for the childs needs. clothing, school supplies, food, some entertainment and a part of that goes to savings for when the child turns 18 to use for college needs.
This will take care of all those lazy moms who quit work to live of child support.

Going to jail for non-payment is a last resort for the court. I've personally been in court and seen the judge grant deadbeats more time to get their lives together. It's when there is a blatant disregard for the orders of the court when the judge feels that there is no other option.

Maybe they think they've hit rock bottom?
I know a family, the dad owns this trucking company and he is loaded, so he could easily afford it.
He skipped out on so many support payments. when he was addressed about it, he bought his ex-wife a car, and just got away with it.
