The company I work for has office hours of monday - friday 8-4:30. We're having carpets installed tomorrow (Wednesday) so I'm told we're gonna close the office down. I asked if it was with pay & she said "probably without pay". Can they do that? I mean, its not MY fault I can't go to work!

(that was just incase the details aren't added but covered up...)

I should ALSO add that I would be the ONLY employee in the company effected by the shut-down. Everyone else works out of the office & on a job site... I work for a construction company... I would be the only one who would be forced to not work without pay so I would be the only one forced to use a vacation day to cover the pay...

Nope, they do not have to pay, especially if they can show it is a company wide furlough. What they usually will do is offer the "opportunity" for employees to specify the day as a vacation day, thereby which you would get paid, and one day of vacation would be deducted from your accrued vacation. It seems harsh, however, companies often do this in slow cycles as a means of 1) reducing a bit of payroll, 2) working off some of the accrued vacation account liability. My view is that it isn't an unreasonable move on your employer's part. My advice would be to take a vacation day if you have it coming, and cooperate. If you are a contract worker or do not have accrued vacation time, then you have my sympathy if a lost day of pay is going to disrupt your cash flow. That is never easy. I would urge you to start putting away some savings so that if this ever happens again, you might be able to view it as a windfall , in the sense of an unexpected day to rest and restore.
