Laptops do have power supplies. Granted they are not as big as the ones for Desktops, but they still perform the necessary power conversion to operate your laptop. More than likely it is a heat issue that initially caused the problem. Now, there may be more wrong. Everything is on the Motherboard for laptops, so you may have to end up replacing the motherboard. Over the years, I have had numerous problems with Dell Laptops doing the same thing, luckily our service contract covers it and I would just call for replacement parts. Hope this helps...

Does it do this when on the Battery or Wall Adapter. If, it does with both. The Over-Heating of CPU may be the problem. Be sure the fan works and Vent not blocked.
If, it does it on Battery, it could be your battery going bad.
If, it does it on Wall Adapter then it may be the adapter. This is your actual "power supply". You plug into 115 Volts AC and just like a Tower the power supply converts the 115 VAC into 12-17 Volts DC for your Laptop. Where it plugs into the Laptop inside is another small board that changes the 12-17 VDC into various voltages the MOBO need, usually +12, +5, +3 and possibly Negative of those. Be sure the wires not loose on your Wall Adapter and you can check the output with a Volt Meter to be sure in not fluctuating.

well if your light is still on it probably isnt the hard drive... how long have you had it ? did you buy it new, used, or refurbished? still got the warranty? I would probably say it is the power supply... but it could even be the motherboard. Anyways... does your battery hold charge. I had a problem like this once and found out the problem and it was really small. I had an old laptop and battery held no charge and the AC adapter cord was not working properly because whenever the wire is moved a certain way it would shut off...cause it was messed up.... well nvm... but goodluck...

Hard to tell from that description, but you're definately on the right track.
Assuming your laptop is plugged in, does it indicate that it's plugged in - as though it's charging? It could be that the power cord is the issue. Another thing to check (although not suggested by the manufacturer - and do not do this if there is ANY chance of a power surge - and be sure you're plugged into a surge protector) is take the battery out and run it with only the power cord in. Does it still happen?
Does your hard drive make an inordinate amount of noise?
Let us know!

Laptops don't have power supplies. They have batteries. If you get this problem while not plugged into the wall socket and when plugged in to the wall socket then it is not that.

Check the fan-does it work or is it dirty. Can cause it to overheat and shutdown.
