In Greek mythology, Pandora ("all-gifted") was the first woman. Zeus and the other gods created her as part of the punishment of mankind for Prometheus' theft of the secret of fire. According to the myth, Pandora opened a container releasing all the evils of mankind—greed, vanity, slander, envy, pining—leaving only hope inside once she had closed it again.

Well, I researched this topic for English class last year (my freshman year of high school) and so I hope this might help. There was a man that gave the gift of fire to the world, and by doing so he was defying Zeus. Well Zeus didn't like it so much, and so he created Pandora. She was this beautiful woman, and he sent her to the man, to offer her hand in marriage. The part that Pandora's box was supposed to play was her dowry. Pandora was supposed to give it to the man when he agreed to marry her, as her gift for agreeing. Well, the man knew that Pandora was the work of Zeus and denied her. So she went to his brother. Haha, it's rather funny. He agreed to marry her, and together they opened the box, and unleashed disease, famine, death, and all the evils unto the world. I don't believe there was anything left in the box once it was opened. As I said before, all the evils of the world, including greed, cruelty. I hope that answers your question. =) sorry to write so much..haha.

Long, long ago when the world was a perfect place, Pandora was given a box and instructed not to open it under any circumstances. However her curiosity got the better of her and she couldn't resist taking a peep - greed, vanity, slander, envy and pining jumped out. Hope remained in the box because Pandora shut it in. What followed was a terrible period until Pandora happened to open the box again, and hope flew out, thus helping mankind to deal with the other things which escaped.
The box was given to Pandora by Zeus in order to punish mankind as they had conspired with another God, Prometheus who gave them the gift of fire.

Here's the meaning and the apparent paradox of the story, and it cuts against how our culture understands hope. For the ancient Greeks, hope is the worst of the divine curses inflicted on humanity, because it prompts us to endure, even when giving up is the most rational thing to do-- it simply prolongs our misery. As you can see, what the ancient Greeks understood as hope, and how the West currently understands it, are very different. Our current understanding has been deeply influenced by thinking about hope as a Christian theological virtue. For the ancient Greeks, hope was ironic and tragic. This is what the myth of Pandora's box seeks to illumine.

All the trouble and misery in the world were in the box...hate, pain, fear, war, greed, all the rest of humanity's problems.
In the bottom of the box was Hope, the last to get out and Pandora nearly shut it in.

It was the gift of free will inclusive of all good and bad decisions and action humans could take and/or make. What was left is hope - highly overrated if you want my opinion. Hope is the state of mind that reduces human ability to analyze, compute and act as required by facts of life. Ever since hope was kept in Pandora's box all humans hope for the best and do nothing about it...
