The blue - black color after treating with iodine solution in the dechlorophylled leaf indicates the production of starch because this region was exposed to the sun's light. This is because starch reacts with iodine to produce a blue - black color.
The part which was concealed using a black strip doesn't become blue - black because no starch is formed there, as this region was not exposed to sunlight. Hence this experiments shows that sunlight is essential for photosynthesis in plants.
