I was told I had 2 females and after the babies were born I discover I didn't. I separated them but they are trying to eat the cage. I got two to keep them together. I was told I could "fix" the male, but I have called different vets and they don't do it.
Is this a lost cause??

There is no way to Fix a hamster. Whoever told you this lied to you. You have to keep them apart and in seperate areas of your room/house. They will continue to try to get together to mate. You may also have another litter of babies on the way since hamsters can mate within hours of having babies. Seperate the babies from the mother at 21 days old or the male offspring can inseminate the mother.

Try putting the male in another room to the female. It could be that he can sense something is up by the female hamsters scent. When female hamsters get pregnant they have more hormones in their blood and this changes their scent. So if the male can not smell the female he wont be so stressed. But its really the female we want to calm down, so she doesn't harm the babies. Give her plenty of bedding and put the cage in a dark and warm room with a non-fluctuating heat. The room should be noiseless with no direct sunlight on the cage. While she is pregnant (2-2 1/2 weeks) do no give her any fresh vegetables or fruit as it could upset her stomach. Just keep her happy until the birth (I would take the wheel out until the babies are in another cage) And when they are born don't touch them until they are eating dried food (2 weeks) because this is when you can take them out (Maybe at 4 weeks) and separate them from the mother. Hope that helps and good luck with the birth.

Only way is to separate them.

We bought a guinea pig, very similar to a hamster, a few years ago... unknown to us, she was pregnant at the time. Anyway, a few months later, one guinea pig turned into about 17. Separation is the only solution unless you want a cagefull of redneck hamsters.
