We use the plastic milk crates you can buy at Walmart or whatever. Our hens are in a house and we just set the crates on the floor and they go in and out of them as needed. We have poles up for roosting at night. They free roam during the day.

Most chickens don't care what it is as long as it is soft. I nail four 2"x4"x16" together with a plywood bottom then fill it with hay. I then nail them to the inside of my pen. The hens will do the rest.

Many places give away pallets. It is nice free wood. Get some of these and build boxes.
