Because the reality that the massive waves of immigration that France has been experiencing lately is destroying French culture.
The French may be cowardly fools, but they don't like anybody messing with their beloved culture!

no mail service - If the USPS did not exist the market would provide a company or companies like UPS or FedEx that could do better. Right now the government has a monopoly due to the fact if a UPS man opens your mailbox he will go to jail. reject all priviliedges to drive on public roads/highways - So socialism invented roads and bridges? These are paid for by a consumption tax known as fuel taxes and vehicle registration. There is no problem with states mandating road & repair projects. Do I get my drivers license or registration from the federal government? This has nothing to do with centralized government. reject all hospital services - My insurance, not the government, pays for my hospital bills. How is this related to socialism in any way? reject protection from the military - How is this related to socialism in any way? reject police services/protection, reject firemen if their house is on fire - Now you are just getting silly assuming all services = socialism. reject social security, reject medicare - Finally you pick services that actually have something to do with socialism. I would be more than happy to reject it if I and my employer could opt out of paying for it. reject free education with public schools - Again, more than happy to reject it as long as I don't have to pay for it. Why do people who use private schooling have to pay for public schools also?

They will see soon that conservatism by itself doesnot solve problems. You need a clear vision and more benign world view. Will French economy soar when Sarkozy crushes the immigrants, legal or illegal? So, THEY are the problem behind the fall of the French economy, are they? That's too simplistic a view. The French will learn it the hard way. Fear wins votes but loses the general public.

Sarkozy is not a neoconservative. Sarkozy wishes for better free trade agreements, a stonger EU, better global warming government initiatives, and better immigration controls pouring millions into Europe from Africa. He is a conservative, but, not a neocon, more, a Gerald Ford, moderate and sensible conservatism.

Voting in a conservative to replace another conservative is hardly what I would call “progressive change.” Maybe as an American-friendly conservative, Sarkozy will be able to positively influence Bush on the issues of global warming and the war in Iraq.

Sweeping changes always signal a desire for change...I guess the French are not satisfied with the status quo....

My French friend supposes that people are buying the fear-based messages that tell them they need to vote for the candidate who can protect them. There were a lot of messages about how fearful and terrible the immigrant problem is.
