Labour never think anything through, I'm afraid to say - because they spent the last 10 years ignoring all the signs that it's going pear-shaped, all the decisions they make now are purely knee-jerk.
Labour desperately needs mothers back in the work force in order to keep the economy strong. What boggles my mind is that they have not ONCE thought about making people work who currently sit on their as*ses all day claiming benefits because it's an easier way to live (I am obviously not talking about everyone, but about a fair few people).
All Labour is doing i setting up yet another lost generation of children...

Maternal rights allow mothers to stay home with their child once they have been born, with pay and the employer cannot refuse since it is against the law. in some countries the father is also protected with up to 6 weeks leave with pay for children under a certain age. I'm not trying to sound insensitive here but it is the parents problem to care for the child and its looking after and not the employers. i think a solution would be that all work places have an area for employees children for such events.there are also youth centers and other ways of having children entertained whilst being looked after and safe. in case of an illness the parent can take a leave of absence since all employees are entitled to a certain amount of days for such emergencies.

I am a single parent with 2 small children. The givernemtn allows me to work full or part time and tops up my wages to allow me to put my children into nursery while I am there. This is great for the kids (playing with other children, learning loads of things there) and good for me as back in the day it was very hard for mothers who had been away from work for a long period (5yrs +) to get back into work.
I get full pay if Im off while my children are ill, and most employers do give this. There are a small minority of people who dont appreciate what mothers actually contribute and see us as a drain for their business, they are the ones who are unfair in the work place and dont allow time off and give no pay whilst off.

Children that are too young for school can go to daycare. school aged children are in school all day and most schools have before and after care for a very cheap price. As far as holiday's and sickness you may have to pay someone once in a while but that probably should have been considered before having a child.

trying to get single parents back to work as then it will save them money which could be spent or much better things, like the nhs or the police etc... they are making it easy for single parents to be able to work flex hours so it makes it easy on them and they needs as picking kids up from school etc...
every employer lets even full time workers go home if things like you say happen anyway...
plus they will be lots more benefits single parents will be able to claim to go towards child care etc to help during school holidays etc... everything will have a plus side...

Here in the U.S. the conservatives realized that government aid is designed to be a safety net not a hammock. Being a single parent is not a good choice if you are not really wealthy. There are plenty of single mothers working and plenty more people who made better decisions than to have children they could not afford.
The conservatives realize that if you want to discourage something, you tax it. If you want to encourage something you subsidize it. Therefore it stands to reason you should not tax people who make wise decisions nor subsidize those who make dopey decisions.

Social economics dictates the current government thinks the majority of people see single parents, especially young single female single parents as trouble, and a minority they can manipulate and pick on to win voters in the local and general elections. If you look at the actual numbers of parents returning to work, theirs no significant increase in them returning to work, cause of the difficulties you point out. Being a parent is the hardest job, especially a single parent like me. I think the government should pay you!
Employers are changing their policies slowly, but its gonna take another ten years or so for us to catch up with other countries.
+ also the employers need to think of men and women in this position.

This goverment does not give a hoot about how a lone parent looks after their child as long as they are working. They want disabled working no matter what their ailments are. Their attitude if they can crawl they can pick litter up with their teeth. As long as they pay taxes and pension contributions that they can squander overseas and on wars.
