Do you have a filter on the phone/s as well as on your modem?

It sounds like you don't

Sounds like a wiring fault in your phone wiring.

If you plug a handset into the extension lead do you get dial tone only if you pick up the other handset? If so it's definitely a wiring fault...

BT's position is (or at least it used to be) that up to the main socket is their responsibility... and beyond the main socket is *only* their responsibility if they fitted the wiring into the back of the main socket. If someone else fitted the wiring into the back of the main socket then it's not allowed... and they won;t fix it and will charge for any problems it causes. If you've got a modern socket where the front comes off to reveal another socket underneath then you are allowed to wire to the front socket's connectors but *NOT* the rear socket's connectors.

So... it's not Orange's problem. It's probably not BT's problem if it works OK from the main socket. It's probably a fault in the house phone wiring that is probably your responsibility. If you've got a modern master phone socket, you can replace all of the wiring yourself from the phone socket onwards... buy an extension kit and follow the instructions.

First of all why are you using an extension lead?
The modem should be connected to the telephone socket direct, not via an extension lead!
If like me your PC is upstairs, and you have only one telephone socket downstairs, the answer is to set up a wireless network

How about a wireless network? I have a wireless broadband router and my land line phone is wireless. I can have my laptop 35 feet away from the modem before I lose signal and my phone can be 65 feet away from the phone socket before I lose contact. My modem is connected to a filter which is attached to my phone so they don't interfer with one another.

What I think you should do is get separate lines so you don't have to worry about that. or get another Internet provider.
