Every flower that I planted died!?

Question

I don't know what to do. No flowers will grow in my flower beds anywhere. I live in louisville kentucky. My dirt? My neighbors have the same problem on both sides of me. The first year I moved here I spent 300 on flowers and as soon as I put them in the ground they didn't last long at all. I really need help!

Agree with Dragon. Amend your soil. Add manure (Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart sell cow manure or since you're in KY get well composted horse manure from horse farms, usually cheap), leaf mould, straw...clay is non porous and is smothering your flowers. Water with MiracleGro, fish emulsion, root stimulator (Fertilome makes a great stim.)

Have you tried planting with Miracle grow soil. They have all kinds . I always add it to my soil and it really does help the flowers bud more and foliage plants grow fuller and bigger. I am not familiar with Kentucky's soil I am sorry, I live in Vermont, but I do know that soils enriched with nutrients will help.I am so sorry you lost your plants. The loss of money and time is heartbreaking, have you gone to Home Depot or better yet your local garden center to ask questions? Bring in some sample soil so they can see what you are dealing with and they can serve you better.$300.00 is a lot of money to lose. Give it a try. Again I'm sorry.

You need to check what type of soil you have and then you can decide which plants will grow. The common tests can be done quite easily usually pH and salt levels all which select for what plants will grow. also take into account the amount of sunlight and how exposed to the elements the patch of ground is. Check in your local garden center and they will be abl to help you with soil testing. There are lovely plants that ill grow in all types of soil (think about the earth and the variety of climates and soils in it) so dont worry something will grow.

first choose the flower species that are readily adaptable in your area. then have your soil tested to find a suitable flowering plant to be planted. Flowering plants need 3 basic things: adequate sunshine, sufficient water and ample nutrients. BE sure that your plant get these things in right proportion. You can consult your local garden shop for the most suitable flowering plant in your area.

I suggest making an area into a raise bed the sides can be brick or railway sleepers then fill it with a mix of top soil & grit then you will be able to grow any sun loving plant that needs good drainage.....Im thinking about fan palms cactus - plants that should generally be native to your area.

I have several relatives that live your way. If I remember right the dirt is red clay... You may need to go to Home Depot (or some other such place) and get some top soil. It is good rich black dirt. Also, don't forget to water your flowers.

I recommend getting some good potting/top soil and put where you want a flower bed. Your flowers will take off in the good soil.

I agree with p/p. To begin with, take a sample of the dirt in a jar and bring it to your local ag/extension office, or in leiu of that a nursery who can tell you exactly wehre to go, or perhapse do the tests themselves. Once you have that information, you can find out exactly what you need to add to the soil. Another option, is to build raised beds. Best of luck!
