Bayer makes a product from Iron Phosphate that works very well. The slugs or snails eat it and starve to death. It's non-toxic to animals, birds, and children. I've used it for a year now and am still astounded how well it works.

I have a totally organic garden and hate the idea of putting down slug pellets for precisely this reason. Have you tried putting porridge oats around the plants you're trying to protect? It does work as the slugs hate getting the oats on them.

The main danger of poisoning will be with Hedgehogs, they will either eat the slug pellets directly or will eat the slugs that have already had the pellets. Slow and painful death.

Boil a kettle of water and pour it into a bowl. Add salt and mix until its all dissolved. Next, pour in flour to make a paste. With an old brush, paint the mixture onto any surface that has slug or snail problems and watch them wither as they try to eat the flour residue with the salt.

Yeah, I`m looking for interesting, `kind` ways of discouraging slugs and snails. If I had to resort to chemicals, I would resort to buying the veges instead!

No chemicals can be truly safe especially for birds. Apparently a ring of copper wire around plants is supposed to be very effective although I haven't tried it. Not much good for a large area of course.
