Of course it was a success. It drove Saddam Hussein out of the small oil rich country he had invaded, and it gave Kuwait back its freedom from that butcher and tyrant. "Popular" is really not the term you seek. Obviously, no war is popular. However, it did have the support on the American legislators and people. It was well worth driving Saddam out of a country he tried to occupy.

Chow!!

It was a military success, yes. Should it have been fought at all? Probably not. As stated here, a Bush Administration official gave the green light for Saddam to invade Kuwait. Kuwait "owed" money to Iraq for fighting with Iran, whom Kuwait feared. After the long and costly war with Iran, Kuwait didn't pay up. Worse yet, they were slant-drilling into Iraq's oil reserves.

Prior to that, we could have prevented the war by not arming, financing and training Iraq AND Iran. This caused instability in the region, with Iraq emerging as the regional superpower.

It was a success. The Iraqis were driven out of Kuwait, and the country was returned to the Kuwaitis. No war is ever popular. It was worth it. It began the reigning in of Saddam Hussein.

My opinion is that it was a success. It was not popular but it was not unpopular either. It was something that needed to be done and we did it in a timely manner with few losses and we successfully moved the invaders out of Kuwait. Another plus is that there was no invasion of Iraq.

the war's objective was to eject Saddam from Kuwait. Yes that indeed happened. The Iraqi army was ejected from Kuwait.

the problem was that Bush (Sr.) encouraged the Shiites to rise up and when they did expecting the US to help, the US stood by as Saddam's war choppers mowed them down. Why do they hate the US and don't trust us?

We could have prevented the whole thing by not allowing our diplomat to tell Sadam that it would be ok with us if he invaded Kuwait. That isnt our way though.

It would have been much more successful without allowing the invasion in the first place.

Popular? Not really, but the reaction was more apathetic than anything else.

Surely it was a success to the victors but the defeated ones cannot accept so they have several alibis. It wa a popular war though it was only a testing ground of the American sophisticated hi-tech inventions, in our present age of mystery as what the Holy Bible declares.
