No it's not based on a true story. It's not a book or anything. But the rituals and everything that was in the film, are real, true life events that all Pagans follow.

In the Wickerman - (and I am speaking about the first one) they use Paganism, Wicca, Druidism, all the original religions before Christianity came along.

using a Wicker man in rituals was around well before Christianity.

the remake, should never have been made. There was no way it could live up to the original.

The wicker man was an ancient roman torture system for the early christians and both films depict the ritual excellentley. The films are apparrantly based on an incident that happened in the mid seventies that has never been resolved. Needless to say the small island which the incidents supposedly took place on does exist and traces of rituals such as the wicker man have been found, includung a mid build wicker man. Either waythe ritual is one that dabbles in evil and should not be played with.

I think that's the beauty of the film, it makes it seem real... and you can imagine an island of pagan scots happily going about their business, occasionally making a sacrifice when the weather's bad. Did you see the line of text on the opening credits? It says something like 'The producers would like to thank the people of Summerisle for their religious insight'. :)

No way is it a documentary though... I do believe there's a 'wicker man' festival in Scotland every year where they burn a wicker man, but I'm pretty sure there's no-one inside when they light it... well, fairly sure...

The Wicker Man is loosely based around Pagan beliefs, but the story itself is totally fictional.

I have not seen the remake as I had heard it was too terrible to waste time watching!

No but it is based on pagan rituals from ancient times. The original is far better than the shoddy remake.

No, it's not based on a true story, it borrows elements from old Pagan (ie Pre Christian) belief systems....

Totally agree about the remake......Nic Cage and everybody involved with this pile of clag should be ashamed of themselves.....lol
