You need to install the DVD burning software that came with your DVD drive FIRST.

I looked up the Argos catalogue and I can see 2 DVD re-writers - the Philips or Freecom. They both are USB2 external drives and XP should recognise either one when plugged into your PC. The fact that it doesn't may indicate a hardware connection problem: with the cable, the PC's USB port itself, or a faulty drive (I assume you installed the CD that came with the drive).
Have you used any USB devices successfully before? If not, you need to check that it is actually working. If the hardware on the PC checks out, try a different cable, and if that does not help, the drive may be flaky. If you have access to a another PC, you could double check that it will also NOT recognise the drive before you make a trip to Argos. You have 14 days to return it, anyway.

I burn to DVD's if I have a ton of pics and videos to back up. Then I can play them in my dvd player too. cd's are typically for music and DVD's are typically used for video. CD's hold 700MB and DVD's hold 4G so they hold about 5X's more. I didn't do the actual math.
