Don't ask personal questions of your customers. The regulars will become-- not friends, but more familiar and more willing to talk-- if they are happy with their most recent purchase and not in a hurry.

I had a very pleasant 15 minutes' chat with the conductor of my local classical orchestra (on how and when he selects the music for upcoming concerts) once, about the fifth time I'd seen him. It helped that I knew to call him "Maestro" :)

This happens very often because people are generally busy with their jobs if you are calling by phone.

If he is already a customer on the database with your company, you can explain in detail why you are seeking personal information. After all you are bound by laws when you seek and use personal information.

Don't get personal. Be polite and leave it at that. Some people are just easily irritated.

What sort of personal questions? If this person is a customer, and not a friend or relation, it could be that what you are asking about is none of your business.....
