Most fish stocks around the world are in trouble and in danger of being over fished. Without close management they would be depleted in a very short time

There are plenty of fish in the sea but not the ones we want for eating which is why there are fishing quotas in place.

They are also there to prevent over fishing of certain areas so that there will be fish in the future and we don't just eat them all now.

Quite a bit depends on how you define "plenty"
Some species have been fished to the point of extinction.
So while by actual count are a lot of fish in the oceans, but on a specie by specie basis, not so much.
Quotas as an effort to manage stocks, and not have any given specie fished out.

Another answer is: Quotas ? I don't know, have you seen Orange Roughy in the markets ?

Depending on what kind of fish and what there reproduction female fish produces, fish and game figures a percentage to natural predators, a percentage to sickness, and a percentage to humans fishing hooks. Fish and game wants to make sure that the species is not having more taken out of the water than it can reproduce. So it doesn't become endangered or put the ecosystem out of whack. In other words to ensure there are plenty of fish in the sea for our kids and their kids and so on.

Quite simple smartass - that's an ancient saying from back in the days when there WERE plenty of fish in the sea. How lucky for them to have no concept of the future over-fishing.

There USED to be plenty of fish in the sea. That's where the fish and boyfriend/girlfriend analogy connects. Many species have been overfished and the populations are diminishing to dangerous levels. The same with a good man...or WOMAN!!! >=o)

What do you mean by plenty? I think that people are taking so much fish from the ocean that the other animals have nothing to eat. Its all about the Food Chain.

in the "old days" when man caught fish and man ate fish, that was probably true. nowadays man wants specific types and sizes of fish to eat and trawls what he can get for pets, oils and even fertilises his fields with them paying little heed to the fact stocks have to replenish.
