my dad used to say "keep your eyes peeled", but I could never figure out how to do that without excessive bloodletting

As a shop worker, during shelf-filling I have to keep an eye out for anything that's reached or is past its sell-by date.
In my spare time when I go for walks out in the country, I keep an eye out for things like butterflies or rare wild flowers.
