nope they shouldnt. just having you there should be good enough. not everyone can afford lots of money to attend celebrations and if they want you there then it should be taken into account.

Is this for you to travel to his party? Go on a trip with him for his celebration? Is it to put in for a super duper present?
I am having a milestone birthday party this year and I am asking my guests to pay for their own meal and wine (restaurant) no present required.
So guess it depends on what the "loadsa cash" your forking out is for.
If it is just someone's idea, tell them to can it because of the expense. If it is the birthday boys idea, tell him only if he will spend same on your birthday.
Whatever, have a blast and enjoy your mate's day in a way more affordable to you.

A "load of cash" is a very individual measure. Money is not the important thing, especially not amongst friends.
If it is a real struggle to make the trip, sending a nice telegram or flowers is a warm way to send thoughts and wishes, nobody can be expected to break his neck over a birthday.

friendship isn't about how much cash you got! just the fact of you being there to celebrate the special day should be enough! don't you think?

Tell your friends that you would love to be able to join them, but it is out of your budget. Give the friend a card and an appropriate gift!

If you honestly cant afford it or you think its too steep then no way! Just tell him it aint going to happen, and if he is your mate he'll understand.

No. If you have to pay to go to a party, it isn't a party.
