For normal females your period comes once a month, If it does not than your either pregnant or have female problems. Some females do skip periods once in a while, but if it's too long than see a doctor.

It takes about a month for a woman to develop and egg and allow for an embryo to implant. When she does not get pg the tissues which she developed in her uterus for the embryo to grow are depleted and she gets her bleeding.
