Define "alot?" Philadelphia is the 6th lastgest city in the USA. It's not exactly Wyoming.... Murder while newworthy is mostly a drug realated/ domestic violence thing. Unless you hang out with that crowd?
As for other crime? It varies. The police stats by district can be found at http://www.ppdonline.org.

The BIG problem here is DRUGS. Phila is a major east coast drug center. Herion, weed, Meth, Coke, are shipped thru, made, sold, or distrubted to smaller towns from Phila. The 'burbs may look quiet? But they are filled with addicts who drive to Phila to get high. The Phila Weekly even has a article on the top 10 drug corners. http://www. philadelphiaweekly.com Where there are drugs, crime is sure to follow.....

Throughout my life I have heard my suburban friends scared of coming to Philly because of what they see on the news. While it IS true and I have been in the neighborhoods where a crime might have occured, I have never actually SEEN or been a victim of a crime. It's the same when I lived in NY. The worse thing I saw was someone peeing near a building. I think that in any major city there is a problem with crime. Staying out of the "bad" neighborhoods is not a guarantee either since every so often there are horrible crimes happening in the better areas here.

Probably no more or less than in a comparable large city.

I have to laugh whenever I hear about crime in Philadelphia. Years ago, when the baseball staduim was in the city, you'd park wherever you found a space. And sure, enough, a little kid would come out of nowhere and say" watch your car for a quarter, mister."
I understood these kids were just trying to hustle some pocket change,, so, I told them if you do a real good job, I'll pay you 50 cents. I never had a problem, but if you say"no" big brother who alreay has three convictions for auto theft will come and pay your car a visit.

My understanding is that next to the tourist area crime is terrible and that Philadelphia is not currently a very well run city.

We have crime just like any other major city.
Since this is an election year for Mayor of Philadelphia.
Crime is number one issue with most Philadelphians.
And the media runs with it. I think they should change the Chapter a mayor needs more time to turn city around after his predecessor basically did nothing but hire his family and friends
