Yes, yes, yes. Bush's policies do not hurt Castro. It harms the Cuban people. Castro has everything he needs. The people suffer because they cannot get the things they need. What puzzles me is the Cubans in Miami who agree with Bush. They illegally send drugs and money to their relatives. If Bush's policy were not in effect they would not have to break the law to help their relatives.

Please get a visa and go live in Cuba for a year. Write a book about your experiences. Or, read the chapter on Cuba in P J O'Rourke's "Eat The Rich". Do a little research into how dissenters are treated in Cuba. Better yet, go to Cuba and try to do or say anything that reflects badly on Fidel or on the government there. It will be an experience you will never forget.

yeah I guess that's why thousands of Americans flee by rafts to Cuba to flee the oppression and political persecutions they face in the US.

It is such a tragedy that Americans do not feel safe in their homes, that they do not have a right to freedoms like speech, religion and the press. It is scary to think how Americans are hunted by special police forces and thrown in to jail, then set in rickety boats and set afloat in the ocean and if they return they could face death.

I mean you never hear of Cubans fleeing Cuba do you? i mean that would mean things are hell over there and since Castro is the good guy I guess things are pretty spiffy in Cuba huh?

Your ranting only sums up to support for Cuba. Castro saw an opportunity and tried to take it with the New Orleans disaster, Bush stopped him. Get over it.....

excuse me billy, but the us denied about help from EVERY country for katrina - including canada!
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/8/31/235829/261
its not a cuba or canada problem, its a pride problem. the us loves to be seen as the hero - it has no problem giving aid to other countries. but when the tables are turned and the us is the victim - then it has a problem because the world sees it in a "weak" position.
ok, maybe castro would have scored some pr points for the aid. but i would rather have thousands of people still alive today then to worry about some pr points from a dying dictator. in hurricane michelle, castro accepted us aid, and 5 people died. in hurricane michelle, bush didn't accept aid FROM ANYONE, and thousands DIED. don' tell me thousands of AMERICANS DYING is more important then accepting aid - not just from cuba - but from anyone!
and BTW, yes, many americans just like cubans leave their country as well doing points in history. did you forget about when most blacks went to canada to escape the slavery in the us? when people were lynched and beaten to death? or the draft during WWII? or right now, because we have the most incompetent leader in the world? or did you forget about that part of us history?

i don't think you are getting the full story about castro, do you believe so? Boon/wiki

As an american, I don’t think that americans are getting the full story about castro. I by no means like castro or his government (infact I hate it), but castro while a ruthless tyrant in the earlier 60’s and 70’s, has done a lot a GOOD in recent years that america just isn’t telling you, but the rest of the world knows. But assure me, americans (like me), are starting to understand the truth. Remember, there are two sides to every story – even with castro. America tells you castro is a ruthless dictator. But what america won’t tell you is…
1.) The pope (a vocal critic of communism, and castro knows it), met with him in 1998, denounced communism, but also denouced the “excess” of capitalism (AKA AMERICA) and to resist “crass materialism.”
2.) The pope (JOHN PAUL II) stood SIDE BY SIDE wth castro, the first pope to visit the island, went to the cathedral in havana, and denounced communism IN FRONT OF CASTRO. He didn’t only denounce the government for cuba’s poverty, but also blamed “restrictive economic measures” – the us embargo.
3.) The pope criticized castro for allowing abortion in cuban hospitals. A month later, castro condemned abortion as a form of birth control on the island,.
4.) In 1969, christmas was abolished in cuba. In 1998 (the pope’s visit), he reinstated christmas, and allowed cubans to celebrate the holiday on the island with religious proceedings. The pope thanked him with a telegram. (BTW, in cuba, christmas isn’t a capitalist holiday, but I know one country where it is………..)
5.) In 2003, he marked the fifth anniversary of the pope’s visit with a mass in havana. Although he is supposed to be atheist (at least that what america tells you), there is an ARCHDIOSES OF HAVANA in CUBA, a CATHOLIC BISHOP who presides,a CATHOLIC CATHEDRAL and CATHOLIC SERVICES held there. He allows cubans to worship in the cathedral. Castro doesn’t restrict it.
6.) When the pope died, castro was very emotional, set aside three days of mourning for the country, and attended the catholic cathedral – his first in decades. Castro “revered” and “respected” the pope, yet castro knows the pope is against communism. Castro allowed the pope’s funeral to be broadcast on cuban television.

Now enough with the pope, let’s move on……….

7.) The CIA has tried to kill castro over 600 times, and has failed everytime.
8.) Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki (president of south africa) warmly accepted castro in south africa and thanked him for sending a hundred cuban doctors to Botswana to fight the war on HIV/AIDS in that country. He was awarded the “order of good hope” for this. The doctors are an “ongoing commitment” to fighting HIV/AIDS in that country. Is THAT so bad?
9.) Castro met with Malcolm X in 1960 in the hotel theresa harlem in nyc. He respected what he has done for blacks in cuba and in the U.S., but made it clear just like the pope did that he didn’t “approve” of communism. Neither do I, or anyone else.
10.) For those canadians out there, castro was a friend of prime minister trudeau, and was a pallbearer during his funeral. Canada openly trades with cuba, and millions of canadians (and americans going through canada) go to cuba. Prime minister chretien went to havana in 1998 and the canadian government was essential in building parts of the airport in havana.
11.) The EU praised cuba’s questions on human rights and has become cuba’s largest
trading partner because of the us embargo.

And the most horrible part of it all…………

12.) After hurricane katrina, castro wanted to send THOUSANDS of cuban doctors to
send 20 TONS of medicine to new orleans, when the us government wasn’t even able to even get its doctors to the city, and most of the national guard was in iraq. Bush REFUSED THE OFFER. WTF? In natural disasters, AID USURPS POLITICS. Even castro himself knows this. The US had no problem breaking the embargo rules to give aid to cuba during hurricane michelle in 2001 , but has a problem with cuban doctors bringing 20 TONS of medicine and equipment to new orleans, when many of the people needed those medicines and the entire city was under water? I wonder if the us told you that. NOT. Bush is quoted as saying “don’t play politics” during the disaster. Many people died at the airport (the elderly) because of “lack of medical care.” Cuts from glass quickly became infections because of the toxic waters. The 20 TONS of medicine could have saved lives and the thousands of doctors could have saved lives. Yet bush played politics and thousands of AMERICANS lost their lives because of it. Castro didn’t deny american help during hurricane michelle. Bush did with hurricane katrina. Now who’s the real enemy here, for DENYING help during a national crisis?
13.) Cuba also allowed doctors to render aid to pakistan during the earthquake – more than any other country - those requests weren’t denied however.
14.) Some 14,000 cuban doctors are giving free treatment to venezuela’s poor - I wonder if that is happening in the us?
15.) Cuba has done so much with its doctors – its impossible to list them all – see all of them at http://mondediplo.com/2006/08/11cuba.

Now to the stats………..
1.) All cubans own the homes they live in – can’t say that about the us
2.) Cuban HIV rate – 0.09, US HIV rate – 0.6; and for those who don’t understand basic math – 0.6 is higher than 0.09
3.) Despite the us trashing cuba, on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_Development_Index, cuba is seen with a blue HDI – same as the us!! Cuba is kind of seen as the “richest” third world country. The real problem in the carribean is haiti, the poorest country in the western hemisphere – red. And THAT country doesn’t have an embargo or a communist leader. If the us had its way with the embargo – cuba would be haiti. And the us couldn’t give a damn about that.
4.) Cuba is the largest island (both in population and land) in the carribean.
5.) The UN since 1991 has voted repeatly to condemn the embargo. In 2006, the US and Isreal were the only countries to vote for the embargo. The entire world voted against it. The UN also voted in favor of closing GITMO.
6.) In a show of utter hypocrisy, the us PAYS the cuban government thousands of dollars for gitmo – yet the us doesn’t want americans to spend money in cuban – plus many navy soldiers go to canada to smoke cuban cigars. Trading with the enemy huh?
7.) Even if you are a dual citizen (like for the us and canada), the us STILL doesn’t want you to visit cuba and can fine you!
8.) Pres. Jimmy Carter spoke in Havana to end the embargo.
9.) Despite the us restrictions, american businesses are slowly by surely conducting business with cuba. 200,000 americans are supposed to go to cuba in the upcoming years. Its becoming a nice destination since its not americanized.
10.) There is a mcdonalds and subway at GITMO. If the americans can capitalize GITMO out of all places, can you IMAGINE what havana will look like?

In the end, while I (like the pope and malcolm x) disagree with castro’s communist policies – america is completing ignoring the good that he has done. The sad part was the katrina part – america would let its own people die rather than to accept help from cuba so the us won’t have that stigma on the history books. That to me is the saddest part of the embargo. We are so quick to look at cuba as the victims and gladly broke the embargo rules to help the people during hurricane michelle, but once the tables were turned we would rather die knowing we didn’t accept help from cuba then to give the elderly people life-saving drugs, considering cuba could have gotten there quick enough since its not that far from new orleans. Even Castro, who HATES the US, didn’t deny his people american aid during hurricane michelle. Bush however did deny his people help with katrina by refusing to allow the cuban doctors to send medicines that could have save lives. And we want to call castro the enemy, even he wasn’t that pompous to deny medical help to his own country……..
