as any other animal, including us, every single being has its purpose. We are all a part of a food chain that keeps the life going. U see, rats r a great sorce of life for many animals that hunt them, like many kinds of birds etc. also, they get rid of many unwanted bacteria and viruses by eating decomposing things or something like that... there r a lot of things rats have a purpose. _

... uhm,
1. source of food.some places in the world culture rats that are clean and those that are edible..
2. experiments. sometimes rats are used to test the effectivity of a drug, a medicine or a substance that may in future be used for human consumption..
3. pets. white rats or rodents are used as domestic pets..
4. prey. these animals, though small, they are part of the delicate balance of nature. without them some animals might starve, for example a snake might die without enough supply of food and an eagle might die because of the loss of snakes, and so on and so forth..

everything has its purpose...
hope i helped... Ü

They have no more or less of a purpose than any other animal. They survive because they fit an environmental niche.
