I thought everyone knew this...but...here goes.

President John F Kennedy was assassinated on November 22nd 1962. He was, at the time, a very popular president (except for the guy who shot him, of course) and it was a very 'public' assassination. He was travelling in a motorcade in the streets of Dallas when he was shot from a nearby building.

No-one was ever convicted for this, as the suspect was shot by Jack Ruby before he could appear in court.

It is said that every American can remember where they were and what they were doing at the time he was shot. (the President, that is, not the acccused assassin)
