Interest rates were 18% or higher.
Our hostages had remained in Iranian custody for months. This was the birth of the ABC News program NIGHTLINE where Ted Koppel reported daily on the status of the hostages.
President Carter stated that a "state of national malaise" hovered over the country. Not the kind of words that should be uttered by a national leader!
We had voted to turn over the Panama Canal to the nation of Panama.
The Soviet Union had introduced mobile missile launchers that were continuously moved around behind the Iron Curtain.
There was a serious imbalance between the number of Soviet tanks and the NATO tanks deployed in Europe.
There was a serious imbalance in troop strength.
We needed to introduce a new generation of missiles in Europe.
Carter had cancelled the B-1 Bomber and the NEUTRON BOMB that was designed to kill people without destroying buildings.
There was an underlying uneasiness that the United States was not spending enough money to upgrade our military forces and their equipment in order to counter the Soviet threat.
Ronald Regan was making his third attempt to get the Republican nomination for president and he succeeded.
Because of high interest rates and high inflation, the mood of the people was indeed uneasy.
The taking and holding of the hostages in Iran was demoralizing.
An unsuccessful attempt to rescue them was thwarted because of a dust storm.
Americans were looking for a more self-assured and inspiring leader and Ronald Regan fit the bill perfectly.
He had been a staunch anti-Communist forever and fit the mood of the country perfectly at that time.
There were some debates with his opponents where Ronald Regan's comfort in front of a microphone and a camera came from when he was a radio sports announcer and a movie and television actor. He had been the president of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) from 1947-52
He had been governor of California so he had plenty of experience as a political chief executive.
When he worked for the General Electric Theater Television series in the 50's, he lived in a totally electric house on San Onofre Street in Pacific Pallisades. They moved from this house when they left for the White House after he was elected president.
When he worked for General Electric he traveled to the different GE factories around the country. Reagan was a Democrat until he was 39 years old. He started to talk with the GE corporate executives who complained about the extremely high and unfair corporate taxes they had to pay. This started to open his eyes about the politics of taxation.
This caused him to become a Republican.
He would always say, " I didn't leave the Democratic Party, the Democratic Party left me."
As president, John F. Kennedy cut taxes in order to stimulate economic growth and it worked. This increased economic growth created more tax revenue than before the taxes were cut.
Reagan was also an advocate of decreased personal and corporate taxes to effect the same results.
Reagan campaigned on the platforn of a strong modernized defense and the need to stand up to all communist countries.
Ronald Reagan was tall, photogenic, and extremely comfortable in any public debate. He was a skilled and well-prepared debater.
Jimmy Carter, by contrast, had a soft and meek demeanor that made a lot of people think he was too soft and non-assertive for purposes of standing up to the Soviets and the Iranians who had our hostages.
The hostages that were being held in Iran made the U.S. look impotent.
Americans held Jimmy Carter responsible for this national embarrasment.
