The movie "300," depicting the conflict between Sparta and Persia, is loosely based on real historical and cultural evidence. I say loosely, because the film was intended to entertain, and they naturally took creative liberties with many aspects of the events the film supposedly chronicles to make the film more entertaining.

The ancient Persians originated from the area currently known as Iran. I was aware of this when I was watching the movie at the cinema, and I cringed more than once at what I perceived as political commentary on current affairs, in the guise of a fictional motion picture.

Awkward.

I still thought it was a great film, but I've wondered about how intentional the apparent commentary is.

They are not Iranians. They are Persians. The name Iran was given to the descendants of the Persians, who have significant differences.
