I am living in China, and have been recently writing some travel articles. I know I can sell them directly to magazines and newspapers. However I would prefer to be able to find an agent to place them for me as I only want to write as a hobby, not as a full time job.

How can I find an good reliable agent?

I wouldn't bother going with an agent for non-fiction, you won't make lots of money on each article and then you would have to pay a % to your agent. It's not worth it, if this is only an hobby.

You best bet is to goggle and search for the travel magazines, then read their guidelines and send the articles in yourself.

I'm a published writer of non-fiction as well as fiction.

Answerer #1 has nailed this. I worked in PR for a long time and not one freelance writer who approached me had an agent.

Do it yourself. If it's really a hobby but you don't have a lot of time, target your magazines very narrowly and establish good relations with those publications. As your portfolio of published work grows, this will get easier and easier because you can submit samples that were published and were possibly feature/cover stories. Good luck!
