If so...should it include main characters only?

Character profiles are not part of a synopsis. Only send them when an agent or publisher specifically makes them part of a submission package request.

A synopsis is usually held to one or two pages. It's a condensing of the entire book into a couple paragraphs--start to finish--and includes how the book ends.

Always follow an agent/publisher's submission guidelines to the letter! You'll not only look like an amateur if you don't, but you're likely not going to be read, either.

As a published author, I know my only chance to make a good solid first impression is to give them what they asked for in the most professional package.

Good luck to you. :o)

When you try and sell a manuscript you are advertising. You don't want to bore people to death.

My advice, from business documents, is keep the main document brief, because busy people who are worth more money than you are will not want to waste their time.

If they like it they will ask for more information, or, add a second document that contains all the boring minor details.

Remember, sell sell sell.
