Gollum was a hobbit who was possesssed by the "ONE RING"
He forgot how to look after himself, forgot about his family and friends, all that matter was the ring.
When he lost the ring to bimbo, he felt his life was over. He had to get the ring back. This is why he befriended Frodo to trick him and to get the ring back. Luckily Sam knew what Gollums games was before it was too late for Frodo.
