Salman made his acting debut in the 1988 film Biwi Ho To Aisi where he played a supporting role.
His first leading role in a Bollywood movie was in Rajshri Productions's romantic film Maine Pyar Kiya (1989). The film went on to become one of India's top-grossing movies. [1] It also won him a Filmfare Best Debut Award, (1990) and a nomination for the Filmfare Best Actor Award. The film also marked the debut of Rajshri director Sooraj Barjatya.
His second venture with director Sooraj Barjatya, Hum Aapke Hain Koun (1994), remains one of Indian cinema's highest grossing films ever.[1][2] It was responsible for drawing film-viewers back to the cinema rather than watching pirated videos.[citation needed]
Since his success in Maine Pyar Kiya, Salman has appeared in many films, of which many have done well at the box office and some have not done as well. However, his box office successes have been numerous enough that he is still considered one of the top three stars in Bollywood.[2]
Some of his biggest box office hits since his debut include Sanam Bewafa (1991), Saajan (1991), Karan Arjun (1995), Judwaa (1997), Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya (1998), Hum Saath-Saath Hain: We Stand United (1999), Biwi No.1 (1999), Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999), Tere Naam (2003), Baghban (2003), Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004), Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya? (2005), and No Entry (2005).
Khan starred in the highest earning films of 1989, 1991, 1994, 1999, and 2005.[3]
His recent releases included Jaan-E-Mann (2006), Baabul (2006), and Salaam-e-Ishq: A Tribute To Love (2007). None of these releases have done as well at the box office as expected. He is scheduled to appear in his first Hollywood movie, Marigold: An Adventure in India, which will open in the U.S. in August 2007. One of his other movie ventures, Kalash, which is directed by talk show titan Vipin Handa, will open in 2008.
