bought a new USB HD, connected it to PC, XP seems recognized and installed it automatically as is supposed to, but the additional icon does not appear in My computer...went to device manager, it is there, initialized it...checked for the update of the driver, its OK, manually installed the driver from the manufacturer site, though no need to do so for XP...but still the icon does not appear...pls give a glue...I am not so good with computers

Try to plug another usb port, there is 2 kind of USB ports, one of them working usb 1.2 , and other 2.0 , i think you plugged usb 1.2 sometimes some usb drives cannot work with 1.2 , try different usb ports.
