This was the first major land battle of the armies in Virginia. On July 16, 1861, the untried Union army under Brig. Gen. Irvin McDowell marched from Washington against the Confederate army, which was drawn up behind Bull Run beyond Centreville. On the 21st, McDowell crossed at Sudley Ford and attacked the Confederate left flank on Matthews Hill. Fighting raged throughout the day as Confederate forces were driven back to Henry Hill. Late in the afternoon, Confederate reinforcements (one brigade arriving by rail from the Shenandoah Valley) extended and broke the Union right flank. The Federal retreat rapidly deteriorated into a rout. Although victorious, Confederate forces were too disorganized to pursue. Confederate Gen. Bee and Col. Bartow were killed. Thomas J. Jackson earned the nom de guerre “Stonewall.” By July 22, the shattered Union army reached the safety of Washington. This battle convinced the Lincoln administration that the war would be a long and costly affair. McDowell was relieved of command of the Union army and replaced by Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan, who set about reorganizing and training the troops.

The first outcome was a Confederate victory over the Union.
The second outcome was people believed in the gloriousness of going off to war and fight . From Bull Run to the end of the Civil War this would drastically change from one of glory to war is hell as sherman would say.
The third outcome was to show how the Confederates were better organized at the top of the leadership in the field.
The fourth outcome was the war would not be fought and completed in one single desperate fight for survivl or surrender but a dragged out war to cleanse the nation by blood.
The fifth outcome would be is that it would take the North more than a mere advantage in the amount of men to win a battle but it would take strategy ,stamina and a will or reason to fight.
The sixth outcome was the difference in the style of fighting would have to change. This unfortunately did not happen too soon in the Civil War as cpmpiled to the amount of casualties suffered on both sides in the conflict. The strategies were behind the times while the mechanzation was ahead of the time to the point that whole regiments were wiped out by a barrage of cannon fire like putting steak into a hamburger grinder.
The seventh outcome would be that eventually the North would need more than a preservation of the Union as a point of morale to defeat the South but would need a moral cause to strength their appetite to fight for what they believed was right and the tenacity of a general who would do this objective.

The Confederates under the command of General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard soundly defeated the Union Army under the command of General Irwin McDowell on July 21, 1861. It is also known as 'First Manassas'. Was fought in Virginia near the small stream called "Bull Run" about 30 miles Southwest of Washington, D. C. The Union army outnumbered the Confederates by some 8,000 soldiers. It is the battle in which General Thomas Jonathan Jackson earned the nickname "Stonewall". Battle lasted approximately 5 hours. The Union army literally turned their backs on the enemy and ran all the way back to Washington, but the Confederates were too disorganized to give chase or the Civil War might have ended that day.
