Pregnancy tests can show a positive when you aren't very far along, at all. The doctor is telling you that there isn't enough development at this point to actually feel the baby. I'd say you aren't far along at all. I'm curious though, why you didn't discuss this with the doctor. It's important to stay in the room, not leaving until your questions are answered, and you understand what is being said. If this is your first child, I'm guessing you would have many questions. The doctor can give you a time frame, as to how far along you are, by calculating your last period, and through examination. He/she must have given you some idea of how far you are. If not, you must be vigilent about getting the information you need to make decisions regarding the changes in your life. Speak up, it's your body and your right to know what is happening.

A vaginal ultrasound is usually only done between 5 - 8 weeks pregnant as the uterus is too low for an abdominal ultrasound. It usually requires a semi-empty bladder to position the uterus where it can be scanned.
Its unusual for an ultrasound to be done before 9 weeks for that reason. Was it done to establish whether or not you are pregnant? How long ago was your last period? Was the doctor worried about the possibility of an ectopic pregnancy?
If everything is OK check again in 5 weeks. They should then be able to tell if you are pregnant, and if so, how far along you are.

your doc may have meant that they couldn't see the baby yet. vaginal ultrasound can usually detect a fetus as early as 6 weeks but not always. gestation is based on the first day of your last period. Babys heartbeat usually isn't seen on ultrasound until 7-8weeks and isn't heard on a doppler until about 10-12 weeks. You are probably 6weeks or earlier. the pregnancy test detects the HCG hormone thats produced starting from the moment of conception. Your doc really should have clarified. Don't hesistate to call your doctors office anytime you have a question. best wishes nad congratulations

That just means you probably aren't very far along if he couldnt tell much with an ultrasound. Usually an ultrasound is done around 16-20 weeks to determine the sex so by then your doc should be able to tell you how far along you are given the measurements of the baby. I wouldnt worry dear.

Your spotting on March 28 was probably an actual period, but just lighter than normal.

I'm in my second pregnancy now. The first doctor visit I had was at about 5 weeks. It showed up in the urine test, but was still too small to show up in the vaginal ultrasound.

About a week later, I had a second appointment, and could see the baby (just a small spot) in the ultrasound.

Everything is probably fine. Sometimes you can get a positive on the urine test, when it's still too soon to see the baby on the ultrasound.

I have experienced this. A doctor was very rude and condescending to me so I changed doctors. That particular doctor actually called me and asked why I did not come to my re-check visit. II bluntly told him that I did not like the way he treated me. I told him I am an adult and expected to be treated as such. Whenever meeting a new doctor I make it very clear that this is MY body, MY health and all s/he is doing is offering direction. I hate to say this but we all know of doctors/surgeons who have a "God" complex. Too bad many don't respect the human condition and lack the ability to communicate. It would likely save lives.

A pregnancy test detects HCG hormones in your blood or urine, this is an indicator of pregnancy. It detects it much sooner than an ultrasound scan can show pregnancy. It won't be long before they can do the ultrasound scan at which time they can give you a better indication of how far along you are.

Doctors are people too, and you are paying them for their service. Ask your doctor these questions! If he doesn't answer to your satisfaction or doesn't know the answer, go get another doctor. Don't be intimidated and afraid to ask anything you want to know about your or your baby's health. That's why you are paying them the big bucks!
