Hmm, it has to have more sentences associated with it in a story . Add more words to make that particular sentence understandable.
1. Scenario 1- If you added one more word "I would rather you slept in" is easier. A person volunteered to help another. That person said, \"oh no, that is not necessary, Id rather you slept in" since it is your only day off. But thanks for the offer. I really appreciate it"
2.Scenario2- Doctors office. Doctor saying to patient "No, I would rather you slept than remaining awake to wait for your husband to come home.

Somone being polite is trying to tell you to:-
shut up, turn over, leave me alone and let me get some rest. You might be able to sleep in, in the morning but I have to get up, go to work and spend 8 hours in a misery filled building with people I dislike. You might find it fun to converse your way through the night, but I'm tired. For the love of whatever you find holy, wind your bl**dy neck in and give me some peace...
Or words to that effect, anyway.

To me it means that in case you comprehend you're interior the darkness, meaning 'unenlightened' then pursue issues which will gentle your way. A candle lights the way (the path in the direction of enlightenment), it illuminates your inner darkness and shines gentle on your authentic self (that of an enlightened being). so far most of the respond have suggested (illuminated) this factor. The action of lights the candle demands the understanding which you have one, which you have the means and which you will detect it interior the darkness. i do no longer understand what the proverb meant to handle yet it is how i might take it. thank you for the Q

It means "I wish that you would go to sleep, as opposed to (bugging me, talking, washing dishes, whatever the other person is doing)."
