For about 5 days now every time I turn my computer on it will restart after about 1-2 minutes. I rearranged my bios settings about 100 different configurations to get it to just run. I had it set up where it was working fine except it was really slow. I mean slow, I couldn't do any thing. I think this computer has a mind of it's own, this afternoon I thought I would try again. I turned it on and the Windows XP loading page came up and then it restarted. I went to bios and changed some stuff up and it restarted again at the loading page. so i changed some more stuff now it's working just fine. For how long I don't know. So if anybody can help please respond.

Well, pull your battery on the bios so it sets to default settings. Get windows into safe mode and try verifying your memory is okay. Use memtest. You could also roll windows back with system restore. A virus scan might be a good idea too. You could have hardware conflicting. Look in the device manager (right click over my computer and then properties, hardware tab)

Know this sounds crazy but I once had trouble playing a game. If I had sound acceleration turned up it would cause the system to restart.

Go to your start menu, click run, type dxdiag and execute. You can turn down hardware acceleration here.

Also try to find out what programs are running on startup and keep them from starting up next time. msconfig in the run box like dxdiag before. Don't stop any of the windows stuff from starting, just stuff you know what it is and especially if it's something you added recently.

I'm sure other people will have ideas too. Look around online for answers and if you finally get to the point where nothing else works you may have to reinstall your XP. Just keep trying to find what's causing this.

You should try what everyone suggested;

1) check for virus/spyware/trojans
2) check if your cpu cooling and internal fans are working properly
3) if you are able grab some software (might have come with the computer) that can tell you the internal temperature of your computer.

If i were a betting man, i'd say your computer is over-heating though, but obviously before you run out and buy a new fan or a new computer even, it's best to check software first.

You have a virus. I'm having issues myself and have learned that not every anti virus will detect what you have. The most helpful anti spyware, anti virus tools have been adaware, kaspersky (although it keeps telling me I have riskware trying to embed itself in my processes which is scaring the hell out of me) and pc pitstop. In fact, pc pitstop is the only scanner that came up with a trojan ftp attack, all others either nothing or some spyware/adware. You need to get specific instructions on how to detect and remove this, its a process that I'm not trained on. If you'd like to read my recent questions there may be an answer in there for you.

This has happened to a few of my old computers. I just had the company reinstall OS. It may also be a Hard Drive problem. So I would suggest you backup your important files.
