A conspiracy is simply when two or more people get together and plan something (usually something malicious). That being the case, it was a conspiracy regardless of who pulled it off. Whether it was Al Qaeda or the US Government, I wouldn't discount any theory of what happened. Strange things are always afoot at the Circle K (see Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure). Both sides benefitted in some way.

I was there on 9/11. You want to hear what happened? First of all it wasn't a conspiracy. We were receiving memos from the mayor's office almost on a weekly basis that we should be on high alert. An additional 100 security guards were hired this last summer. The ground level had been secured including the truck docks in which the Port Authority had spent millions of dollars in upgrading our security systems. This didn't include the mock tests we were performing to ensure the guards were doing there job. No one ever thought we would get hit from above though. Truck docks secured. Great. We won't have another 1993 bombing event. Entry level secured. Great. We have plans in place if anyone see's a suspicious package and any guard slacking off would be fired. No questions asked as all guards were briefed every morning for 1/2 hour before the shift. The week before a terrorist meeting was to be held where allegedly some government officials was supposed to attend, but was cancelled from my understanding because the new lease owner wanted to hold a meeting regarding the mall he wanted to build on the plaza. This was supposed to be the last summer any free concerts were ever to be held. I do not know if this meeting was ever held or if this was the true reason why this meeting on terrorism was cancelled. The first thing that was done after we were attacked is they evacuated the daycare center (Thank God!) But to this day I will never understand why they didn't evacuate everyone. I still cannot believe they were dumb enough to think the towers would not come down. You know what. I didn't even think it was going to happen, but damnit we had two 747 boeings sticking out of the towers and they were telling us to stand ground? We would be returning to our work detail once the fire was put out??? Look no one will ever know the true terror and details of what happened unless you were there or had any inside sources. Even with the position I held I never received clear answers. Rest in peace my friends.

I'm going to go out on a limb here.
I happen to believe 9/11 was a conspiracy. It sounds horrible, but I believe that it is.
A friend of mine (he's an engineer) from work had me watch the video of the twin towers as they collapsed (you can find this video on the internet). He explained to me how it looks when a building is blown by dynomite vs. collapsing - you should see the blast at the base, or wherever the explosives are set. On the video (watch it slow) you can see the bottom few floors bow and break and windows explode before anything else happens - an event common when demolishing a building with explosives.
I think that the government did set that up - but more along the lines of ignoring an immenent threat and letting it happen. The war with Iraq was not supported up until then. The government was having a hard time defending why our good men and women were over there. After 9/11, support (and funds) for the war skyrocketed. Why? Because we were outraged that thousands of innocent Americans had died - horribly, and seemingly at the hands of the very people we were at war with.
Why would our governmet do this? On reason is money. Another is power.
The vast majority of our fuel oil comes from Iraq and surrounding countries. Why fight with them diplomatically and risk cutting ourselves off, when we could invade, rebuild and make them our friends?
The U.S. is skeptical because of a very simple reason: It's almost unthinkable that thousands of innocent lives would be lost for the mere gain of a few dollars. (OK, more than a few). It's a horrible thing to even consider, let alone believe.

This is by far the best site with info about 9/11....for both those who believe in a conspiracy (by elements of our gov't) and those who support the official story.
http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/project.jsp?project=911_project
From the conspiracy side:
www.911truth.org
www.911pressfortruth.org
http://911research.wtc7.net/index.html
www.patriotsquestion911.com
www.911blogger.com
from pro-official story side:
www.911myths.com
www.debunking911.com
watch "9/11 press for truth" on google video. Documentary following some of the widows of 9/11 and the answers they seek which were not provided by the 9/11 commision report.
I believe in the conspiracy theory. Popular Mechanics was a straw-man-hit-piece...yes i've read it. Fires don't melt steel...so rosie isn't a phycisist...fine. I'm iffy on the collapse of the towers, but 9/11 can be explained as an inside job without there being explosives in the buildings.

Since the September 11, 2001 attacks, a variety of conspiracy theories have emerged which contradict the mainstream account of those events.
The theories typically include suggestions that individuals in (or associated with) the government of the United States knew of the impending attacks and refused to act on that knowledge, or that the attacks were a false flag operation carried out with the intention of stirring up the passions and buying the allegiance of the American people.
Check Wikipedia for more on the subject. Good luck !

I think the focus of your paper shouldn't be about conspiracy theories & what "might have happened", because it's impossible for us to know!
It should be about how the Official Government Story doesn't add up. All we 911 Truthers should focus on is, the Official Government Story (OGS) is FALSE. As many answerers have mentioned documentaries you can watch (I have a whole list in my profile), and NONE of them focus on what might have happened, but instead on blowing holes in the OGS.
As for the argument, "Such an operation would have required too many people in the loop," it can be argued that only a few people needed to be in the know. Marvin Bush was CEO of the company in charge of WTC security. Remote-controlled flight technology exists (think global hawk, Boeing computerized autopilot, or Autoland technology). NORAD was conducting terrorist hijacking drills at EXACTLY the same time, so any "real" hijackings or planes going off course could just be told to the people lower down the ladder, "Don't worry, it's probably part of the drill".
And our government kills people all the time. What's the difference between 1 & 3,000? Especially if they know that nobody would ever believe it (which is obviously true, considering many of the other answerers) & they could get away with it.

The problem you are going to have is finding viable facts.
As an example: Rosie O'Donnell said that 911 was the first time fire ever melted steel. ( suggesting something else brought the towers down )
Unfortunately for Rosie, a recent tanker truck fire weakened the steel in an overpass enough that the structure collapsed. Thus, disproving her theory!
Also, the federal building in Oklahoma city was the epicenter of conspiracy theories. (remember Timothy McVeigh)
Maybe a better topic would be the inaccuracies with most conspiracy theories.
Just type "conspiracy" into any search engine and, you will have mountains of material.

What reasons would the government have for causing 9-11?
none
Specifically who benifited from 9-11?
islamic radicals seeking to distract their poverty stricken populations from the responsible parties and instead dump of all the blame upon the us.
I need a who, why, how, and an explaination as to why the U.S. is generally skeptical about this conspiracy theory.
because there are literally thousands of witnesses and scientific reports? all of those dumb "documentaries" and websites with conspiracy theories are full of inaccuracies, half-truths and just flat out lies spun together by sensationalists out to make a name for themselves out of a tragedy. all of the major ones have been disproved by independent researchers and fact checkers. (but of course that doesnt make for an interesting story so no one pays attention). never take any story at face value; try to find unbiased/scientific review and analysis and see if the "theory" holds up.

Obviously you didn't lose a loved one from 9-11 to think that it might be a conspiracy. Obviously you are not a naturalized American that when the Iraqui's were cheering for the whole thing, it didn't make your stomach cringe. Obviously when the planes struck the towers you where in a safe place.....
Good for you, but what about that happening again???
The government did a knee jerk reaction and made flights impossible for those without id's, stepped up the security, and added a wait to check in time....So is that federal or just the airlines making it rough on their passengers??
Yes, its federal. The airlines can't fly without federal permission. For the safety measures to be safe, it has to be federal. Anything an airplane does has to be federal.
To blame the gov for 9-11 is somewhat reassuring, but something that the pres. did made someone mad, and they exacted that into innocent people.
I don't feel that anyone, unless under drugs or phsychotically derranged would kill innocent civilians to prove a political point.
Prove otherwise, please, but the US government would not do that to its own source of revenue, money works for the gov, so destroying its own tax payers is a hypocritical ideal set on the gov for making things right when you might have lost someone.....

Bin Laden and one of his henchmen said that they categorically caused 9/11. Bin Laden was extremely pleased that both building went down because he never expected this to happen. The USA was caught off guard and should be ashamed of itself for allowing it to occur. What about the Pentagon was that also a conspiracy? What about the plane that went down with all passengers in Pennsylvania? Was that made up? People who have nothing better to do but exercise their twisted little minds invent conspiracies. Some of them actually believe their own stories as if they really happened.
