Jet Blue is usually cheapest, and their hub is JFK.

Otherwise, use www.sidestep.com - it searches all the published fares (even on orbitz and stuff) and links you to the best deal. If you give it alternate airports you might have better luck too. (I can get from Stewart in Newburgh to Fort Lauderdale for $70-$99 each way.)
