Seriously, I wondered the same thing. Then I found out:

tan=sin/cos

That made me feel REAL smart. Hope it helps you.

sine=opposite/hypotenuse
cosine=adjacent/hypotenuse
tangent=opposite/adjacent.

sine/cosine=(opposite/hypotenuse)/(adjacent/hypotenuse)
hypotenuse cancels leaving
sine/cosine=opposite/adjacent=tangent so
tangent=sine/cosine.
