You're probably not using enough lighting, the contrast is set too high, or the shutter speed is too fast. Adjusting the shutter speed will make up for the lack of lighting, and vice versa. Try shooting outdoors or in front of a window during the day.

Its simple...
Your face makes a lot of contrast with the background, in this case the background is very bright... there are 2 simple ways to correct this:

1) Set the "metering mode" of the came to "spot"... this means the camera measures the amount of light in a narrow area that surrounds the crosshair... by default most cameras use a "average" measurement of light and that causes your dark face

2) Even in daylight set the flash to forced ON

the basic principle while takin a snap is to make sure the light source is falling on ur face n not behind u... if the light's at the back it makes the object ahead appear dark ... so next time jus be concious n ull get a great pic! :) tc...

Ive been in that position before

it might be that you are taking it inside and it is too dark.. that's why its always best to use flash... or take the picture outside...

another reason is that the angle you stand can make a shadow.

turn the camera upside down and take the picture. try it it works especially for the dark circles under the eyes.

the lens on the camera may not receive enough light in order to brighten up the pictures

its just the lighting on the camera settings this can be adjusted and just take different shots until you like the effect
