If the subscript refers to the position of the element in the sequence then it cannot be a fraction.

eg if the series is 1,2,3,4,5
then a5 is the 5th term, a2 is the second term.
Therefore there cannot be any fractions.

Unless your subscript has a different meaning.

i don't think so because in a sequence, a(n) usually denotes the n-th term of the sequence, where n is a typical subscript. Since n denotes a particular term, say the 1st term or third term or whatever, i don't think it can be a fraction.

No, the subscript indicates a specific term of a sequence and as such is denoted by a nonnegative integer.

no, subscripts cannot be fractional because they indicate the value of the term which increases as whole numbers.for ex. the subscript of the first term is 1 meaning it is 1st term and 2 meaning it is 2nd term and it goes on.

a sequence (say of real numbers) is a mapping from Z (the non-negative integers into the reals. The subscript notation
(say a sub i) is a shorthand for applying the mapping to i.

a sub i = A(i), where A is the mapping for that particular sequence.

A sequence is defined to be a function from the set of natural numbers to the real numbers. Where A_n is another way of writing f(n). Since the inputs to this function must be natural numbers your subscripts must also be natural numbers (0,1,2...etc).
