No it is not illegal to chat with someone under 18 online in a chat room. It is illegal to try to meet them someplace for real sex though.

It is not illegal to talk to someone under 18 unless your conversation is of the "illegal" kind. Besides, how would you know their age? I can say I am 15 and no one would know any better.** Yeah I wish. lol.

As far as I know talking is not illegal... however if the conversation turns sexual, you're skating on thin ice. If you're over 18 it's best to just chat with people your own age so that you don't toe the line.

you can talk to anyone you want to on the internet. Just make this real. If you are just giving advice that is cool. Don't talk about anything that only their parents should be talking to them about. Don't get personal, or play mind games with them. You might just end up on TV looking like the rest of the idiots who have excuses after excuses as to why they were there just to help the teen. Personally if you don't know these kids then you are just another strange person in a strange world. Let their parents talk to them.

It doesn't become illegal unless you cross certain boundaries that are inappropriate for children under the age of 18. As interpretations of what is/is not appropriate, it would be legally much safer to confine all chatroom conversations to persons that at least represent themselves to be of legal age.

Ever see the movie, "Hard Candy"?

Depends on what you talk about. Talking about sex, yes it is illegal. Talking about hurting the minor is illegal. In fact there is nothing a grown stranger really have to say to a minor, therefore, has no business talking to one.

It depends on where you live and what you talk about. Anyone over the age of 14 in Canada and a number of other countries is considered to be legal sexual age, but in order to engage in "phone sex" or "internet sex" you need to be 18. You could be charged with something called "sexual luring" if you say things like "I'd like to come have sex with you". However, if you just talk about the weather, you aren't in any trouble.

I'm presuming you are 18 or older... it is not illegal, no, unless you cross the legal boundaries of obscenity in the content or images in your conversation. Keep it innocent, and be conscientious of your language and such.

Remember, better to error on the side of caution -- especially in this day and age!

if you plan on going further in your conversations than is morally and sociably acceptable, then I'd tell you to stop. If you're around 30+ years, then why would you want to talk to someone that young, unless they're family? You don't need "friends" that young, and you certainly don't need romantic online prospects that young either.
