i guess i should be more clear. i'm talking about personal property taxes that are now so high a lot of elderly can't stay in the home they've had for ions because of the increased property value

Through property tax we fund sewers, water service, roads, garbage collection, police and fire protection etc. If we want to live in an urban area, we have to pay for the services.
Then there's expropriation.....we hold title at the pleasure of the state.
You're right. We never truly own property just a bundle of rights that run with title.

I don't know where you live, so I don't know if you're paying high taxes or low taxes (and I do realize that this is not really a question but a vent) but to answer it strait, your property would be nearly worthless without highways and roads to get to it, a fire department to keep it from burning down, a police or sherrif's department to control crime, etc. Do you think all that stuff is free?
Also, compare the value of your home to a similar home in a bad school district. If you live in a good school district, it's likely that your home is much more valuable than one in a notoriously bad school district.
Unfortunately, there are places where property taxes are rediculous. Hopefully, you don't live in one of those places. But, I really think you need to stop and think about the services you're getting before you complain.

It is impossible to actually "own" a property in this country, it is technically your's at the pleasure of the government. Though, generally, you are entitled to compensation if it is taken.
Equity is gained as you continue to pay on a property. Eventually to ownership. That is traditional.
Of course, you still need to pay Uncle Sam for the priviledge of owning property. That's called property tax. Though, that is generally a state/county tax.

I understand what your saying and I for one, think it should be after a certain age there should be no more property taxes. This of course is never going to happen but I do know a senior citizen can get a tax freeze on their property if they are under a certain income level.
There are two things for certain in life, taxes and death.
