I just recently got a Pacu from a friend who had 2 in a 55 gal tank. The one I got is approximately a foot long (7 months old) and seems to be getting bigger daily. I have read up on them and learned that they can get as big as 30 inches or more. What size tank is appropriate for a full grown Pacu?

Something around a 280 would be about right. Remember it needs to measure significantly longer than the fish on each side.

IMO for any bigger fishes like Pacu and arowana, you need to have a minimum 4' by 2' by 2' tank. And your tank glass should be 8mm and above. This fish is a very strong fish, so the added thickness of the glass is for your own protection, because it really gonna cause a mess if the break it.

Red bellied Pacu are really not Hobbiest fish these fish in thier natural environment. Are breed and or caught for food. It is not uncommon for them to be 3feet longer or better. Since they are not having to battle for food as the would in the wilds. The tanks would Ideally be 300 and upwards. Most individuals end up donating them to petfarms or stores. The bigger they become the bigger thier teeth are. Since they are related to the piranah . Hope it works out for you.

I love this website for information. they have a good deal of info on your Pacu. these fish get huge and they will need around a 300g tank to do well in. Also they are easily startled and not unheard of for them to break the tank they are in when hitting the glass.

The website lists 1200g tanks, but thats just not feasible for the average hobbyist.

having pacu at the pond would be best.

but in an aquarium maybe at least 95 gallon if you want them to be comfy.

Nothing smaller than a 200 gallon and that's for one. When they get larger if the tank is to small they will slam into the glass until they crack it.
