And so today I discovered a site called TMDMOVIEZ.COM which offers movies for download. I went on their IRC channel and there seems to be a lot of people on. And there also seems to be lots of people on their site judging by their counter, but are the movies really legal to download?

I don't want to be caught and sued or anything like that. Will I get caught? I'm really disturbed by this, but I really want to see this old movie which I can't seem to find anywhere else... Should I just forget about it and look for a place that sells the dvd or something?

YES! You may get caught, but those who are providing the download are more likely to than you are. Always better to be safe than sorry. For legitimate movie downloads, try iTunes or whatever paid service you prefer.

Whether it is illegal or not depends on many things. Some movies are released under a license that allows distribution by anyone. The latest Nine Inch Nails album was released under such a license and hence it is completely legal to make a copy for your friend or to download a copy from the internet as long as you follow all the rules in the license. If the movie you want to download has such a license then it would be legal. Some countries don't honour other countries' copyright laws which means that it is completely legal if you are in one of those countries. Lastly, the crime being committed is "unlawful distribution". This means that uploading without permission is illegal and downloading is not. There are movie services on the internet that allow you to download movies legally because they have permission from the copyright holder to offer this service. If your friend is using BitTorrent, Limewire or another file sharing network, he will be both uploading and downloading at the same time and he will most certainly NOT have permission to upload from the copyright holder. The lawyers involved in these sorts of cases have also used the "make available" argument which says that even if no one actually connects to your computer and downloads the movie from you, the fact that they COULD HAVE is enough to prosecute you.

It depends :-)
If you' re learning computing in self help mode , you' ll need to download movies for the sake of it .
So you' ll learn the correct procedure .
But you' ll delete the movie without even loooking it more then the two/three minutes necessary to judge the quality of the file .
If some twisted mind doubt about this they' ll have to prove that you actually saw the movie .
To do that is very easy for the secret service .
Till the secret service will start and wrap a full investigation on your movie' looking habit you could probably keep studying this mysterious computing area , dowloading and handling large files with XP .

Anytime you're downloading a full-length movie without paying for it, it's illegal.

You most likely will not get caught, but you can get caught, and it is illegal.

Try netflix or the new blockbuster online rental. They tend to have a lot of rare movies you just can't find at a store.

Do not worry about getting caught. That is next to impossible. Worry about the IRC users port hopping from your PC first.
