When my son was 3 month, we took him and his 5 month old cousin and had pictures done together for Mother's Day for Grandma, and before that, I went to Walmart and picked up two of those white letters made to hang on the wall. An E for my son, Eian, and an N for his cousin Nikki, and we painted them. His was blue and silver, and her's was purple. We put each baby in jeans and a white onsie, and gave them those letters. The pictures turned out great.
We did another picture with ducks- stuffed ones and rubber ones, and each baby had an outfit with a ducky on it.
His most recent pics were his 1 year portraits, and he's wearing a shirt that says 'It's fun to be 1', and standing next to a big plastic 1 that the studio had. And we did one with a toy tractor, because his Papaw gave him that for Christmas, so it was a special, meaningful thing to us.
Likely, the studio will have several props on hand, as well as neat ideas. What I always do it dress him in one thing, but bring along at least two other outfits, in case what he's dressed in doesn't go with a cute background I see, or a prop he's particularly interested in.
When you pick out his outfit, don't go with something too 'busy' or something that is just sickeningly cute, because your baby's cuteness might be overwhelmed by it. Some of the best pictures of babies end up being in jeans, a sleeper, a onsie, or a simple sundress, because that's what the baby will feel most comfortable in. If you put him in that adorable suit, he'll spend most of the photo session trying to pull his tie off. =)
Good luck, and I'm sure they'll turn out great!

If he has a favorite toy or blanket you could use that for a prop. I recently did a photo shoot with a little guy about this age sitting in a red wagon wearing a little suit/sweater vest....it was really cute. There are a lot of ideas, your photographer should present some to you. Most of the time the best pictures are the less posed ones.

i always liked
#1 the bib overalls(no shirt) and a wagon or old style wooden fishing poles, or tricyle this photo is cute in sepia
#2 old metal washbucket with towel rubber duckie, and bubbles
#3 straw bale, with red hankerchief under neck, sort of country cowboy style picture.
#4 with child NOT looking at camera..a life like small animal such as a frog that child is touching curiously. this pose tends to show the innosense and inquesitive side to young children.

I do photos for about that age...if he can stand you can use an up side down wooden stool...you take the pict from overhead...also for babies that sit you can use a cute basket or bucket..really anything...they pop up from inside..
